Sulli Popilskis is the veterinarian in charge of the animals used in Columbia's laboratories. All these animals suffered under his watch. Our whistleblower's complaint letter to the IACUC describes Popilskis' anger over a simple request that a dog receive a painkiller. Our whistleblower vet and another veterinarian from Merck noticed a dog who was exhibiting posture and breathing associated with pain. When our vet asked that the dog receive an analgesic, the vet tech supervisor told her that the dog was "just shy." The whistleblower vet had to go to a veterinary surgeon to get the proper painkiller for the dog. Apparently, Popilskis did not like his staff to be questioned-after all, he was the one who had trained them-so he chastised the whistleblower vet. Fortunately, a "higher up" ordered Popilskis to admit that two veterinarians and a veterinary surgeon knew better than a veterinary technician when to administer painkillers. With a head veterinarian such as Popilskis, it is no wonder that the animals in Connolly's, Ferin's, and Stark's experiments suffered so, but it is a wonder that Columbia University would keep such a person in charge.
